The season has ended yet Thom and I are still enjoying the never ending summer weather. Even in November it’s 30 degrees in the sun! However this month there are basically no tourists on the island of Karpathos and it’s time for olive picking, exploring new paths, meeting friends, walking the dog on the beach and most importantly; to relax!

November still has a lot to offer for those who’d like to visit Karpathos. Such as olive picking, walking of course and even the beaches are still nice to go to. Restaurants are open – not as many as in the summer, but still plenty to choose from. Every village has a hangout for the locals where you can enjoy an ouzo and meze.

Exploring while walking

We walked from Menetes to Arkassa recently and the Sea Onions are popping up again along the path. It’s starting to get green again. The nights are getting colder and the greens get to grow in the mornings. Also the Papa Minas walk from Diafani was greener than we thought it would be. Now let’s see how much rain we’ll get in the springtime and how green it will become. The start of 2019 was extremely wet and green. Beautiful! We even had waterfalls – read about this here: https://artandwalk.com/the-waterfalls-of-karpathos/

A few days ago we went drove to Lefkos with friends and walked one of the most lovely routes we have seen there so far. A fairly easy walk by the coastline of Lefkos heading for the forest. Lefkos was completely abandoned to the eye, but did you know there are actually people living here in the winter time?

Olive picking

The last few weeks the olives started to fall down from the trees in Pigadia. The olive press is busy from early in the morning till late at night. A group of friends and us went picking olives at our friend’s garden. At sunset we had finished what was our goal; picking olives from 15 trees! They are pruned and freed of olives, ready to start growing again for the next season.

November 2020 we will offer a week of olive picking fun for those interested! We won’t pick olives all week, but a day or 2. Followed by the visit to the olive press where our olives will get turned into olive oil for our own use. You get to bring your own olive oil home, how nice for cooking! Besides the olive picking we will organize activities such as our walks and workshops, so you won’t get bored! Keep following our social media pages and this website to see the full olive picking week program online soon.

Cheers, Renate
