Today is a special day – it’s June 7th and we get to join the memorial day of Kasos.
Every week during the summer months we embark on a journey for our Kasos Experience. We travel with the yacht ‘Kasos Princess’ for some exploration of the neighboring island of Karpathos. This time however we get to see traditional clothes worn by locals, the local priests singing and even the marines and the army in full armor. Why? To honer the soldiers that died during the holocaust of Kasos in 1824. The defense of the island depended on 600 armed Kasians, inexperienced on land warfare, plus the 300-500 Cretans who had sought refuge on Kasos.
Following are some pictures of the memorial parade.
During our weekly scheduled trip to Kasos we walk up to the village of Panagia and have a look at the beautiful 6 churches. There you’ll hear the story about the fairies and the drunk Lyra player, but we’ll make sure to not let the story about the hymnographer ‘Kassiani’ out either. We also explore the cozy streets of the village Fry and enjoy a locally made lunch with ingredients such as the typical sea fennel. If you happen to visit Karpathos around the 7th of June however, you will be able to see the memorial parade from above pictures as well.
Kasos has lots to offer and few of us truly know the beauty that is Kasos.
Every Wednesday during the summer, from 08:30 to 19:30.
