We head towards the northern part of the island where this hike starts near Olympos, in the small village of Avlona where time seems to have stood still since ancient times. When we leave Avlona, the many donkeys are our spectators. At the same time, we can enjoy the figs growing on the trees (if we are lucky) during the start of our hike.
The first part of the path goes downhill and takes us to an ancient site half way to the beach. The ocean view unfolds in front of us while we reach ancient Vrougounda. There are old tombs carved out of rocks and a visit to the cave chapel is highly worth your time. Perhaps you’ll even take a dip into the sea. The beach looks very different compared to the east side of Karpathos and the views are simply stunning.
The tough part of the hike is our way back to Avlona, back up the mountain. After a traditional lunch (drinks excluded) at a taverna in Avlona, we return to Pigadia.
This hike is only for experienced hikers.
