Before heading out on a walk or hike with us on Karpathos (or elsewhere) during the warm spring or hot summer days, read our tips on what to consider when picking your gear so that you can be able to truly enjoy the exquisite surroundings that nature presents while staying safe and comfortable.
Clothing and gear which will make your hiking tour enjoyable no matter what!
Walking stick – A walking pole takes a lot of strain off your joints while you hike and can help you maintain balance through various types of tricky terrain. Get a foldable one for your travels or borrow one from us on Karpathos.
Water reservoir – With a water reservoir you just grab the tube, bite down and you’re good to go. There’s no stopping or fooling around with your gear. We recommend Platypus or Camelbak.
Cap – wearing a cap is great for preventing both heatstroke and sunburn, whilst also keeping the sun away from your eyes.
Thin top – a long-sleeved thin sweater can protect your skin from sunburn and scratches, but also unwanted companions like ticks. A lightweight, loose-fitting t-shirt is also a comfortable choice.
Packable rain gear – bring a light and packable rain set in your backpack and you’re all set for any switch in weather in case you’re coming to Karpathos in the spring or autumn months.
Trousers, shorts, or zip-off’s – regular trousers keep your legs protected, while shorts aid in keeping your body temperature cooler. Zip-off trousers will let you enjoy both kinds of trousers in one! We recommend Revolution Race.
Bamboo underpants – pair your outfit with underwear in moisture-wicking bamboo material and you’ll feel comfortable during all your hot-weather activities.
Socks – choose socks that are fast drying and have a high moisture-wicking ability. Socks in cotton are not recommended during hot days. We recommend wool or polyester. Wool is often affiliated with winter clothes, but other than keeping you warm, wool also effectively evaporates moisture into the air, thus cooling you down when it’s warm.
Shoes – chafing equals bad memories so a pair of comfortable shoes is the best investment for future adventures! Get a pair that is comfortable and waterproof, in case of any sudden puddles. We recommend Meindl, Hanwag and Lowa. Make sure to look for a GTX pair!
Backpack – Carrying some essential items with you during an adventure can be quite convenient. Even if it is just to carry your water, a backpack will be worth it. We recommend Osprey.
First Aid Kit – having the essentials with you in case of blisters, insect bites, splinters, aches and small wounds can make a huge difference on how the continuation of your hike and your day goes. During the hikes on Karpathos your Art and Walk guide will always carry a first kit with them.
